40 YEARS AGO: HEARTS LOSE FIRST CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL

40 years ago on this day, Accra Hearts of Oak put up a great fight, coming from two goals down to level proceedings against Hafia Guinea in Conakry in the 1977 Africa Club Champions Series final, but the hosts stepped up and took the lead again to go on and win 4-2 on aggregate. The Phobians were appearing in the finals of the Africa Club Continental showpiece for the first time but having lost 0-1 at home to Hafia, they gave their all only to be undone in the latter stages oof the game.

First Round: Saint Joseph Warriors (Liberia) 1 – 3 Hearts

Hearts 2 – 1 St. Joseph Warriors

Second Round: ASC Diaraf (Senegal) 1 – 1 Hearts

Hearts 2 – 1 ASC Diaraf

Quarter-finals: Al Ahly (Egypt) 1 – 0 Hearts

Hearts 3 – 0 Al Ahly

Semi-finals: Mufulira Wanderers (Zambia) 5 – 2 Hearts

Hearts 3 – 0 Mufulira Wanderers

Finals: Hearts 0 – 1 Hafia FC

Hafia 3 – 2 Hearts
