Laryea in a healthy smile |
A Laryea Kingston-inspired Hearts of Oak yesterday licked a determined yet mechanical Sporting Mirren side by a lone goal at the Accra Technical Training Centre pitch, in a friendly that had the hallmark of a competitive encounter in a game that lasted just 60 minutes.
The phobians, still in the teething yet experimental stages of soccer life, saw a vintage Laryea free kick from just outside the box, curve round the wall to sound the opposing net for a goal amidst applause all around. Played 30 minutes per half, the match came to a lively epoch when Mirren launched an early attack, and succeeded in beating Laud Quartey in post yet just as the final ball was speedily zooming into his net, Osei Bonsu appeared like a midget from outer space to scoop the ball away to safety. The game was livened up in various spheres by the exceptional brilliance of Laryea's combination with Ahmed Soulama, whenever a free kick loomed large and had to be set into motion from the left. But there was a moment of sheer copy-book stuff, when a floated ball from midfield located James Abban, who, standing unchallenged right in the 6-yard box still failed to make contact. The game Mirren, on occasions found the energy to respond to the Hearts expeditions and launched a couple of sustained attacks courtesy a Mubarak in the phobian 18-yard box, only for Bonsu to rise to the challenge to deal with the threats all noon with covering from Kofi Agyare. But when Mahatma Otoo's flying free kick was parried over the bar, the writing was on the wall that the phobians had won the day on that solitary Laryea goal. In the second match of the day which also lasted some 60minutes, another Hearts of Oak side beat Bago FC from Takoradi 2-0 with goals from Edward Affum and Douglas Nkrumah.
