Laryea tells colleagues - We are here for business, not pleasure...

Laryea with Abanga and Ganiyu

Laryea Kingston has tasked fellow players that make up the playing body of Hearts of Oak not to relent in their efforts to help restore the pride of the Club, as they prepare for the second round of matches.

The player, who spoke to the entire playing body before last Thursday's training session, was doing so on the premise that some senior players, for reasons best known to themselves, decided to stay away from camp last week, ahead of the FA Cup game against Sharp Arrows yesterday. "We are here for business and not pleasure", Laryea said. The Club has spent so much money to bring some of us here, and it's imperative that we make sure we give our best at all times. I am not a favorite of any of the members of the technical team, at least not yet, because like these new players, I'm coming to fight for regular playing time as well as first team play. And that is what I expect every one of us to do at training, to fight to win favor in the eyes of the technical team, he cautioned. Laryea said the era of living on past glory was gone and society or the fans want new and fresh results, hence they cannot rest on their oars and think that history will favor them on the field of play. To me, names don't play football and we can all see what has happened to the likes of Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroun and Egypt who did not even qualify for the AFCON tournament. We can have all the big names on the local scene but if we don't subject ourselves to training programs, thinking we are good, then it will certainly become a problem because the needed cohesion will not be there and we will just be individuals, he said. In the speech that lasted well over five minutes, Laryea stressed on the need to give the supporters more reasons to patronize the team's matches, adding that no person will want to dish out money to go watch a game and lose consistently. "Before I signed for the team I used to watch Hearts matches from the stands and could hear some of the things the supporters were thinking about the team and some individual players. You will hear them insulting you or sometimes casting insinuations at you from time to time, but the bottom line is that they want to return to their individual homes with not only the three points, but having been satisfied with a good game, he said. The players applauded his brief yet loaded message and promised to join in rewriting the Phobia script even as they prepare for the second round and beyond.
